SSI Federal Payment Amounts
SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income. These amounts, like Social Security benefits, increase annually with the cost-of-living increases. The most recent such increase became effective in January, 2008 and is 2.3 percent. Click here to read more information on the Social Security website.
Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI
A young person attending school who is blind or disabled can earn a certain amount of income without having it count against his or her SSI benefits. For 2008, the maximum amount such a student can earn is $1,550 per month or $6,240 for the year. Each year these amounts are increased by the cost-of-living index, which for 2008 is 2.3 percent over the 2007 amounts. Click here to read more on the Social Security website.
Trial Work Period
If you are receiving social security benefits but would like to work, you can have a trial work period to test your ability to work. The government will allow you to work on a trial basis for nine months, which do not have to be consecutive months, in a 60-month period.
In 2008, if you earn more than $670 in any month, then that month is considered to be one of your trial work months. Click here to read more about this on the Social Security website.
