Medical errors still continue to plague hospitals, with total costs running into the billions of dollars each year. An independent study by the health care ratings company HealthGrades puts the number of medical errors at over 950,000 per year, with close to 100,000 deaths. Healthgrades estimates the cost of these medical errors was almost $9 billion from 2006-2008. Other health care study groups put these numbers even higher. For example, the Society of Actuaries estimates that the number of medical errors in hospitals exceeded 1,500,000 in 2008, with associated costs of $19.5 billion.
We believe decreased staffing levels, particularly of nursing and support personnel, are one of the major reasons for these medical errors. If you believe you have been injured because of a medical error or medical malpractice at a hospital, please give us a call for a free consultation.
