Study Indicates Selenium and Vitamin E Do Not Protect Men From Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer for men is a frequently occurring disease, particularly for men over 50. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 6 American men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetimes. Some preliminary studies had suggested that dietary supplementation with Vitamin E and Selenium would reduce the likelihood of prostate cancer. Drug companies have even been marketing vitamin pills which include higher levels of Selenium as being prostate protective.

In an effort to evaluate these theories, the U.S. National Cancer Institute in 2001 began a 100 million dollar study involving 35,000 men at over 400 sites around the country. The study was suspended this month after an independent analysis of current data suggested the supplements did not reduce the risk of prostate cancer. In fact, the data showed there was a slightly higher number of prostate cancers among men taking Vitamin E alone and a slightly higher number of men who developed diabetes among the group taking Selenium alone. Researchers indicated these findings may just have been coincidental. Unfortunately, however, the study revealed no data to support claims that Vitamin E or Selenium reduced the risk of prostate cancer.

Family Law - Relocation Issues

Current Florida Law (since 2006) requires a parent who intends to relocate more than 50 miles away from his or her residence to notify the other parent of the proposed relocation in writing via a "Notice of Intent to Relocate" and must file a "Certificate of Filing Notice of Intent to Relocate."

The parent who has been put on notice of the proposed move must verify and serve a written objection within 30 days or the law presumes that the relocation is in the best interest of the child and the relocation will be allowed.

If you have been served with a Notice of Intent to Relocate or wish to relocated and you feel it is in the best interest of your child to do so please contact Hardesty, Tyde, Green and Ashton.

Florida Workers Compensation Justice Long Overdue

The Florida Supreme Court overturned a law enacted due to the massive lobbying efforts by the insurance industry that limited injured workers from hiring attorney's from representing them. In 2003 Former Gov. Jeb Bush capitulated to the campaign funds donated by the insurance industry to limit payment of reasonable attorney fees when the insurance company wrongfully denied medically necessary benefits as well as benefits required by state law. The case Murray v. Mariner Health evaluated a case where the injured workers attorney was only paid $8.11 per hour to fight for medically necessary treatment for his client even though the insurance company spent over $16,000 fighting the workers right to obtain these valid benefits. The Supreme Court ruled that if a insurance company wrongfully denies benefits then they must pay reasonable fees when they delay and/or deny benefits that they owe. This is a victory for the citizens of Florida and reintroduces fairness into our justice system. We look forward to assisting you with your Florida Workers Compensation case. Disability Awareness

October is Disability Awareness Month and is also recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Additionally, a week in early October is usually designated as Mental Illness Awareness Week.

Disabilities result from many types of accidents to include vehicular accidents, on-the-job accidents and medical malpractice.
Often these disabilities result in loss of income which is devastating to most families. Often loss income creates family law issues such as inability to pay child support, etc.

Hardesty, Tyde, Green and Ashton have assisted many disabled clients with personal injuries, on-the-job injuries, social security issues, and family law matters.
