Drug Mistakes Kill

The treatment of an illness or injury can become life threatening or cause permanent injury if the wrong medication is used. This type of mistake is occuring at an alarming rate at virtually all levels of medical practice. The mistakes occur in hospitals, pharmacies, out patient clinics and even your trusted family doctors office. Many of the mistakes can be traced back to understaffing, fatigue, poor training and lack of attention to detail. It is also crucial for patients and family members or friends to ask what the medication name is and what it is used to treat along with the dose and frequency. Many medications have similar names and illegible handwriting on prescriptions and records can cause problems that can cost a life or injure a patient. These are preventable instances of malpractice that can be devastating.

Florida Workers Compensation Overview

The Florida Statutes contained in Chapter 440 govern the administration of the workers compensation system. This body of law covers most employees injured in work related accidents. The attached link is an overview of the system and explains the basic idea behind this system. It should be noted that the legislature of Florida reguarly changes the law in this area. The laws applicable to a particular injury are based on the date that the employee was injured.

Injured Workers Suffer While Insurance Companies Profit

Florida's Insurance carriers who write workers compensation policies are laughing all the way to the bank on the back of injured workers in this state. The Palm Beach Post reported that 23 carriers made over $42 million dollars in excess of the cap on profits allowed by law. They are now being required to return this money to the employers they gouged with high premiums. Meanwhile the injured workers of Florida continue to suffer reduced benefits and regular denial of medically necessary treatment for their injuries. In essence the changes forced through the legislature by Jeb Bush in 2003 have resulted in injured workers being denied necessary benefits while employers are overcharged premiums and the insurance industry is pocketing illegal profits. For the details regarding insurance premium overcharging see the following:

Allstate Deception is Typical of Insurance Industry

Allstate Insurance Company has refused to comply with a subpoena to examine their outrageous profits and malfeasance while gouging Florida consumers with excessive rates for auto and home policies while at the same time abandoning longtime customers because of their location. Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty issued an order yesterday prohibiting Allstate and its numerous subsidiaries from issuing any new policies until the subpoena is complied with. It is evident that Allstate has much to hide. Shamefully, this is the same company that last spring petitioned for and received permission to raise may of their rates 30 to 50 percent.
