Social Security Benefits Increase for 2009

50 million people will see a 5.8 percent increase in Social Security benefits next year. This is the largest increase in more than twenty-five years.

The increase will start January 2009. The increase affects retirees, Social Security Income and Social Security Disability recipients.

The standard Supplemental Security Income payment for a couple will increase from $956 per month to $1,011. The SSI payment for an individual will increase from $637 to $674 per month.

The average monthly check for a disabled worker will go up from $1,006 to $1,064.
